About Bryan Mark Fleming

November 12, 1987 – November 12, 2022

Bryan lived with Leigh Syndrome nearly all his life. In 1995, he inspired creation of the People Affected by Leigh Syndrome nonprofit, which later united with other groups to form the UMDF. A willing subject of research, his mtDNA revealed a novel mutation, and his skin cells continue to be used in ongoing studies. Yet, despite his significant health challenges, it was his infectious smile and genuine interest in others that truly defined him. After years of defying the odds, Bryan quietly passed in his sleep on the morning of his 35th birthday.
